Three Worlds Animated is a particularly significant work in Dr. Bill's practice, a meeting point between the pioneering era of computer art and the generative possibilities of today.
Inspired by M.C. Escher’s celebrated 1955 lithograph Three Worlds, the work reimagines its layered perspectives through motion and code: rippling water, reflected trees, and a koi moving through world beneath the surface.
What makes the piece especially compelling is the history behind it. Dr. Bill was among the early pioneers working with computers and plotters as artistic tools in the 1970s. Three Worlds Animated emerged after a 45-year hiatus from computer art, and rekindled collaboration with mathematician and longtime friend Christopher Scussel.
The result feels both historical and distinctly contemporary: an artist from the formative years of computer art returning to code decades later, not simply revisiting his past, but continuing the exploration.
